Heidi Heseltine, Founder of Diversity Study Group (DSG), was invited to contribute an expert industry reflection in Sailors’ Society’s 2023/24 Cadet Report ‘Generation Z- the future of Maritime’ which surveyed 4249 cadets across the UK, Africa, North Asia and South East Asia.
Heidi analysed the data collected on diversity — available in the video (link below) — and was struck by the stark difference in regional responses, underpinning the need for granular analysis of data and a nuanced approach to DEI initiatives.
“What stands out to me from the cadet survey data is the clear variance in responses by region. This highlights the need for a nuanced approach when it comes to diversity, equality, and inclusion (DEI),” said Heidi.
The data reveals several challenges, including perceptions regarding the capabilities of female seafarers and a perceived lack of interest among women in seafaring careers, potentially stemming from limited awareness of the industry and recruitment issues. These findings raise further questions and emphasise the need for a deeper understanding to formulate tailored action plans addressing these issues effectively.
Heidi highlights that it’s useful to understand regional variations in DEI perceptions to tailor effective approaches, considering geographical differences in diversity understanding and manifestation as this may not be uniform across regions due to differing cultural experiences, societal norms, and legislation.
She emphasises the importance of adopting a nuanced approach to understand the varied challenges and perceptions of individuals aspiring to start a seafaring career. Such an approach enables us to grasp their workplace priorities and determine how the industry can effectively provide support.
